if im not mistaken, the first stang to have airbags as an option was the 1987 coupes. Dont quote me on it, for any info like that, email me, im like a freakin book…except on this particular question, lol. Now that was the first year it was an OPTION, they came standard in either 92 or 94, sometime around then.

air bags have been an option since 90 and became standard in 94
as for air bags in older mustangs it is possible but not practical 1978 and older mustangs do not have computers to regulate the device. the cost would be in excess of $ 4000
